Overview
Red Papau Goby are freshwater fish that hail from Java and Bali, Indonesia and can be identified by some of the unique fin characteristics they possess. In addition to their anal and smaller caudal fin, the Red Papau Goby have two dorsal fins and pectoral fins that resemble wings when open.
The Red Papau Goby is one of the more colorful Goby delivering hues of white, orange and brown with a blue belly and one or two black spots on their second dorsal fin.
In nature, Red Papau Gobies makes their home in small, rapidly flowing mountain streams with rocky bottoms. Hobbyists should try to replicate this environment in their home aquarium with a rocky bed bottom and high aeration and strong water movement. A fast-moving, oxygen-rich environment can be achieved through the use of powerheads. Make sure the airline tubing connected to the powerhead inlet is drawing in fresh air. The use of a slightly oversized filter will also increase filtration and water movement. Care should be taken to avoid high water temperatures to ensure greater dissolved oxygen content. A tight-fitting lid or canopy is recommended to prevent escape.
Algae and other food items growing on or encrusting the rocks in the bottom of the tank are essential food sources that offer beneficial foraging activity. The Red Papau will accept most food items small enough to fit in its mouth. Supplement their diet with foods that sink to the bottom of the aquarium such as a high-quality flake food, sinking carnivore pellets and sinking algae wafers.
Gobies can be a great addition to your community tank with other small fish that are peaceful in nature and have similar tank and water requirements.
