The Blue Velvet Nudibranch, also known as the Head Shield Sea Slug, is black in color with blue lines around the outside of its body and down the middle of its head. It has a hammer shaped head and two appendages at the rear, mimicking a flatworm.
This specialized eater will consume flatworms in the aquarium. It sucks up the flatworms using a tube-like proboscis and makes a great natural alternative for flatworm control. However, it must be provided with a steady diet of flatworms in order to thrive. In addition, it is sensitive to rapid changes in water conditions and does not have a long life expectancy. Because of this, only expert aquarists should attempt to maintain this species.
Spawning occurs regularly when more than one of this species is maintained together. Unfortunately, there has not been a good success rate reported in raising the larvae.
The Blue Velvet Nudibranch should be acclimated using the
Drip Method. It can be harmed by pump intakes and drains, so care should be taken to screen these off. It is sensitive to high levels of nitrate and will not tolerate copper-based medications.

My Blue Velvet Nudibranch begun to eat the flatworms off of my live rock after just being in my tank for thirty minutes. He quickly found his food source of flat worms. Very interesting to watch and very attracting to the human eye. Be careful when first placing your blue velvet nudibranch in the tank - a strong current will blow him away.
This little guy started eating flatworms as soon as he attached himself to my rock. Within 30 minutes, he had cleared a 2"X2" area that was infested with flatworms. I would absolutely get one of these if you have flatworm problems. I had used Flatworm Exit before and removed all of them except for the few that were trapped inside the holes within the live rock. The flatworms took a couple of months before they came back and that is the reason I got the Blue Velvet Nudibranch.
Please note: We guarantee that ALL aquaria species we offer will arrive alive and in good condition. However, because of the increased level of care required for this particular species, it has been designated as "Expert Only." This species is recommended only for the expert aquarist, zoo, or research institution please.
