Overview
Batik Snails Neritina variegata are popular options for aquarists. They provide a beneficial addition to a freshwater aquarium or pond due to their ability to eat decaying plant matter and algae, especially enjoying Diatoms and Filamentous Algae. They do not reproduce in freshwater, so you don’t have to worry about them taking over your aquarium or pond. They have striking black and gold patterns and coloration.
This member of the Neritidae family is sensitive to copper and copper compounds. Peaceful snails, they are small and grow to 1” in length.
Although they are scavengers, it is important to supplement their diet with spirulina or blanched or fresh vegetables like zucchini.
