Overview
The Hexagon Brain Coral, Diploastrea heliopora, is a beautiful coral highly coveted for its rare appearance in the aquarium hobby. It is the sole representative of its Genus but is easily recognized among coral enthusiasts by its highly organized, geometric arrangement of striated corallites. The raised, dome-shaped corallites of the Hexagon Brain Coral give it an extremely pleasant appearance that is wonderfully accentuated by its encrusting habit.
Care for Hexagon Brain Coral is relatively easy, making it an excellent choice for the beginner to expert hobbyist. The Hexagon Brain Coral requires moderate lighting combined with medium water movement within the aquarium. Similar to its cousins, the Favia corals, the Hexagon Brain Coral expands its sweeper tentacles at night well beyond the base. It is important to leave space between them and neighbors in the reef aquarium. For continued good health, the Hexagon Brain Coral will also require the addition of calcium, strontium, iodine, magnesium and trace elements. It will also benefit from additional food fed weekly in the form of chopped meaty items, micro-plankton or baby brine or mysis shrimp.
