Overview

The Marcella Butterflyfish Prognathodes marcellae is one of the smaller and rarer Butterflyfish. It is also known as the Diamond Butterflyfish and French Butterflyfish. Its shape, coloration and strong dorsal spine will give it a striking appearance in marine aquariums. With a yellow body and translucent caudal fin, its other fins display in a showy yellow color. It also has two vertical black bars, one of which runs through its eyes.

This Longnose Butterflyfish is a suitable candidate for a FOWLER (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquarium because some inverts and coral polyps in its vicinity can be nibbled or eaten. It can be kept singly or in pairs but should not be housed with other species in the Prognathodes genus or any similarly looking fish. This Butterfly species likes to have a lot of area to swim.

This member of the Chaetodontidae family is an omnivore. It is efficient in seeking out food, due to the shape of its mouth and hairlike teeth that allows it to access small spaces to eat Aiptaisia and other small foods. In addition to this algae, it will accept most frozen meaty preparations and other algae based foods.
