Overview

The Yellow Hawaiian Tang is for many aquarists, the definitive fish of home saltwater aquariums. With its oval-shaped, vibrant yellow body, Zebrasoma flavescens brightens any marine system. The Yellow Hawaiian Tang is an active swimmer that will glide throughout your aquarium in near constant motion, acting as an aquarium tour guide of sorts to any onlooker who follows its meandering swim path.

Though iconic to the reefs of Hawaii, the Yellow Hawaiian Tang's natural habitat is actually widespread throughout the Pacific Ocean as far as Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef. The Yellow Hawaiian Tang is also known as the Yellow Sailfin Tang or Yellow Surgeonfish. For best care, it should be housed in an aquarium of at least 100 gallons with ample room to swim. Like other Tangs, this member of the Acanthuridae family demonstrates territorial aggression towards its own species, or Tangs in general. Therefore, it is best to keep just one Yellow Hawaiian Tang per aquarium, unless multiple Yellow Hawaiian Tangs are introduced into the system simultaneously.

Although the Yellow Hawaiian Tang will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important the Yellow Hawaiian Tang is offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. This will strengthen its immune system, reduce aggression and improve overall health. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least three times per week. Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad and Ocean Nutrition are all ideal products and are very easy to use.

The Yellow Hawaiian Tang is a very common, extremely popular, and hardy addition to any fish-only or reef aquarium system.

This is one of the healthiest looking and brightest Yellow Tangs I've owned. One of the few tangs that came with his original wildlife diet rather than being conditioned to eat flakes. He gets along well with the other tank mates and even my Cleaner Wrasses.
Thomas C Fulton , NY
The three medium specimens I ordered are wonderful! They began schooling in my 135-gallon reef tank almost immediately. They were also hungry and ate readily. They are one of the most enjoyable sights in my tank right now.
S. O Clinton , UT
My Yellow Tang is so fun to watch swim around in my tank. He has received the name Bubbles, and this is due to how he acted when I first put him in my tank. He was trying very, very hard to swim around his reflection off the glass, and my first thought was of the Yellow Tang in Finding Nemo, and his obsession with bubbles. He has been great to have in my tank and adds great color to the “Tank Gang” that I have.
Dave S Long Beach , NY
Beautiful and healthy, the Yellow Hawaiian Tang arrived ready to graze! He's eating red and brown marine algae sheets, and loves shrimp that are supplemented with spirulina (frozen preparation). He never sits still and loves to go end to end in the tank.
Bobby B Lakeworth , FL
This is truly a beautiful fish. I bought it for its beautiful yellow color and it truly brightens my tank. This fish is healthy and about 5 inches long. I feed it green algae plant cubes, or romaine lettuce rubber-banded to a rock.
Brian G Grafton , WV
I purchased a small Yellow Tang from LiveAquaria.com for my reef aquarium. I had a bad case of green hair algae. Four hours after I turned the lights on after acclimating him, he was eating the algae. He loves to swim all day and eats seaweed selects, enriched brine shrimp, frozen seaweed, and marine fish flakes. He makes a bright and active addition to my tank and I am very pleased. Thanks Drs. Foster & Smith for providing aquarists with great fish, corals, inverts, live rock, and plants!

I would highly recomment this fish to anyone. It has been the most rewarding fish in our 75 gallon tank. It has proven quite hardy...the only fish besides our chromis that survived a major ich epidemich - which is saying a lot for a tang species. It is beautiful, with plenty of personality. If you want a successful experience with a tang, get this yellow tang.

Such a lively addition for any tank. They are beautiful swimmers, but very skittish. They do best with lots of peaceful fish to help them come out and be more social. They are very hearty eaters too.
Josh C Gurley , AL
I love this fish; he is a graceful swimmer. Although, he was a finkey eater at first, he became the most agqressivaly, peaceful eater. The Yellow Tang brings out all of the shy fish.
Austin G Mountain Lakes , NJ
I have a Yellow Tang. My Yellow Tang is relatively peaceful. He gets along with all my fish. But I have seen him chase and nip at my Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish. I think this is a great fish for beginners.
Greg B Harrisburg , PA
It is a wonderful amazing fish. He was always around even though we had a lot of fish die. He always stayed alive even when the tank was half empty. This fish is a survivor.
Liz K Sarasota , FL
I love my Yellow Tang. He fit right into the tank. He also is best frends with my Foxface. He acclimated in less than a day. He's my favorite!

Beautiful fish that adds a lot of color to the tank. He is a bit shy but doing well. I purchased him about 2 months ago and he arrived quickly and in very good health. Drs. Foster & Smith only sells the best!
Brandon M Panama City Beach , FL
As others have stated, these fish are A+++. not sure who collects them or how but they are getting great healthy fish. Instantly eating and happy.
Reese A San Francisco , CA
This is a beautiful fish. He grazes on all of my vegetation in the tank and doesn't harm a single thing. It has a great relationship with my cleaner shrimp, he goes up to it and the shrimp cleans it off. The only downside is I have 3 emerald crabs and they have been eating all of the vegetation so there is none left for my tang. Put these guys on algae strips because they are herbivores but if you don't have crabs and have a lot of plants, there is no worry. My tang also enjoys sinking pellets. This is a great addition to a community tank. If they are paired up with other big fish they will do great but don't pair them up with other yellow tangs.
