The Pacific Redstripe Hogfish, also referred to as the Masudai hogfish, Candystripe or Black Spot hogfish, and is a brilliant red with white horizontal stripes. Its common name comes from the coloration and elongated body of these fish. The genus Bodianus has recently been revised, and this fish now has a proper species name. With its peaceful temperament, these fish make a great addition to the saltwater fish or reef aquarium.

A 50-gallon or larger aquarium with hiding places should be provided. It is a very peaceful fish that adjusts quickly to most aquariums. If more than one Pacific Redstripe Hogfish is going to be added to the aquarium, it is very important to do this simultaneously as they will be slightly territorial among themselves. When full grown, mature Pacific Redstripe Hogfish may take a liking to smaller ornamental shrimp that are introduced after the hogfish is established in the reef aquarium.

A diet consisting of meaty foods including vitamin enriched brine shrimp or mysid shrimp is preferred, as well as a high quality marine flake food.

Customer Testimonials

Gavin M New Orleans , LA
One of the most active and curious of all the fish in my tank. He gets along fine with the mystery and six line wrasses, and my tomato clowns don't even bother him. If you're looking for an attractive, active fish for your reef tank, the Pacific Redstripe Hogfish is a great choice.

Perfect addition to my mix reef. I was concerned about adding mine to the DT after QT. My 20 year old purple tang is not very forgiving. But no issues this guy gets right in on the feeding action and is always out and about looking for a snack. Great little fish!
William P Victoria , TX
I have had pretty good luck with this fish but he did eat the Peppermint shrimp. Does eat flake food and is an active swimmer. Looks really good in the tank.
