The Lieutenant Tang is from the reefs of the Maldives Islands and is mostly tan in color with darker lines outlining the body of the fish. The scapulae is circled in a brilliant blue as well as the outline of the anal fin. The tail in time, will take on a forked appearance as the trailers grow.

A 180 gallon or larger aquarium with large amounts of live rock is necessary to provide both plenty of swimming room, and territories within the live rock. It is aggressive toward other Tangs and Surgeonfish, but is peaceful with other fish.

Although Tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. This will strengthen their immune system, reduce aggression and improve their overall health. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least 3 times per week. Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad and Ocean Nutrition are all ideal products and are very easy to use.

Customer Testimonials

This fish is very healthy and active. He also appears to be the king of the tank. There were some nipped fins on my Tomini Tang within a week of his introduction. I suspect the Lieutenant Tang, but can't be sure. Everything seems to have settled down. The Lieutenant Tang is my favorite fish and I look forward to watching him as he grows and attains his adult coloration.

I ordered this fish from Diver's Den a year ago and he quickly became a favorite of mine. He's a fast grower and utilizes all of the available swimming space in the tank, so make sure you have a lot of space!! He has a great temperament and plays nicely with my other tangs, but if confronted he can hold his own. I love the coloration on him, and the color changes are very interesting to watch. This is a great addition to any reef or fish only tank!

I received a Lieutenant Tang a few weeks ago. He's now in the 540 gallon display tank and is doing great. He likes to eat the algae off the sand and rocks etc.
