Overview

The Black Magic Taro Plant is a cultivated color variety of the Elephant Ear Plant that is sure to draw welcome attention to your pond landscape. Exotic in appearance, this plant makes a fantastic statement in any pond or water garden thanks to its towering presence, oversized leaves, and dramatic coloration. Under favorable conditions, the Black Magic Taro Plant can grow up to 4 feet tall (or more) boasting large arrow or heart-shaped leaves that resemble the ears of an elephant. The leaves can grow up to 3 feet in length to boldly showcase its brooding black/purple coloration. Burgundy-colored stems inject an unexpected pop of color that keeps the color palette from becoming overwhelming. The Black Magic Taro Plant makes a dramatic focal point to your pond or water garden especially when paired with plants with brighter, lighter colored foliage.

For best care, pot the Black Magic Taro Plant in a 5-gallon planting container and set the planter in your pond or water garden in about 1 to 6 inches of water. The Black Magic Taro Plant does best when planted in partial shade but will tolerate full sun as long as it is kept in water. The Black Magic Taro Plant loves humid weather and lots of fertilizer to sustain vigorous growth. The Black Magic Taro Plant is not cold tolerant and must be over-wintered indoors in areas that experience freezing winters. The Black Magic Taro Plant can be easily over wintered as a house plant if kept in a sunny window in a saucer of water. Zones 8-11.
