The Violet-Stemmed Taro Plant is a cultivated color variety of the Elephant Ear Plant that is sure to draw welcome attention to your pond landscape. Exotic in appearance, this plant makes a fantastic statement in any pond or water garden thanks to its towering presence and dramatic oversized leaves. Under favorable conditions, the Violet-Stemmed Taro Plant can grow up to 4 feet tall (or more) boasting large arrow or heart-shaped leaves that resemble the ears of an elephant. The leaves can grow up to 3 feet in length and a sports a beautiful blue-green coloration. Each enormous leaf sits atop a black/violet-colored stem that often recedes from view, giving the Violet-Stemmed Taro Plant an airy appearance despite notable size. Depending on the lighting, this unique color combination can create a fantastic optical illusion of floating foliage.
For best care, pot the Violet-Stemmed Taro Plant in a 5-gallon planting container and set the planter in your pond or water garden in about 1 to 6 inches of water. The Violet-Stemmed Taro Plant does best when planted in partial shade but will tolerate full sun as long as it is kept in water. The Violet-Stemmed Taro Plant loves humid weather and lots of fertilizer to sustain vigorous growth.
