Filamentosa Barb

The Filamentosa Barb is a beautiful and active freshwater fish known for its shimmering silver to golden body, dark-edged scales, and the elongated filament-like extensions that develop on the dorsal fin of mature males. Peaceful yet energetic, this species does best when kept in schools of six or more, allowing their natural social behavior and impressive coloration to shine.

Filamentosa Barbs thrive in a well-planted aquarium of at least 30 gallons with clean, well-oxygenated water and moderate water movement. Include driftwood, rocks, and hardy plants to create a natural environment while leaving plenty of open swimming space. They are peaceful community fish and can be housed with other active, similarly sized species.

Breeding Filamentosa Barbs is possible in the home aquarium, although it is less common than with many other barb species. A conditioned breeding pair or small group should be placed in a separate spawning aquarium with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop. The female will scatter adhesive eggs, which the male fertilizes. After spawning, the adults should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs. The fry hatch within a few days and become free-swimming shortly afterward. Feed the fry infusoria or commercially prepared liquid fry food initially, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.

Filamentosa Barbs are omnivores and readily accept a varied diet. Offer a high-quality flake or pellet food as their staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Providing vegetable-based foods or spirulina flakes will also help maintain their health, vibrant coloration, and overall condition.
