Overview
The Lemon Cichlid, Neolamprologus leleupi, is a brilliantly colored African cichlid native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika. Its vibrant yellow to deep orange coloration makes it one of the most recognizable Tanganyikan cichlids. Both males and females display similar coloration, although males are typically slightly larger and develop more pointed dorsal and anal fins.
An aquarium of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a single pair, while larger aquariums are ideal for communities of Lake Tanganyika cichlids. Provide plenty of rockwork arranged to create caves and crevices, as these fish establish territories and seek shelter among the rocks. A sandy or fine gravel substrate closely replicates their natural habitat. Although generally peaceful toward similarly sized Tanganyikan species, the Lemon Cichlid becomes territorial during breeding and should not be housed with overly aggressive tankmates.
The Lemon Cichlid is a cave-spawning species that forms monogamous breeding pairs. Eggs are deposited on the walls or ceiling of a secluded cave, where the female guards and fans the eggs while the male protects the surrounding territory. The eggs hatch in approximately 2 to 4 days, and the fry become free-swimming within 7 to 10 days. Newly hatched brine shrimp, microworms, and finely crushed prepared foods are ideal first foods for growing fry.
The Lemon Cichlid is an omnivore that benefits from a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia, and other small crustaceans. Occasional Spirulina-based foods and other vegetable matter will help provide balanced nutrition while promoting vibrant coloration and long-term health.
