Overview
The Cobalt Ice Blue Cichlid, Maylandia callainos, comes from the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi, Africa. Both males and females display a brilliant icy blue to cobalt blue coloration, although males are generally larger and exhibit more intense coloration, especially during breeding.
The Cobalt Ice Blue Cichlid does well in an aquarium that is at least 50 gallons with plenty of rocks to establish territories and a sandy substrate. As a typical mbuna, this species is territorial and can be aggressive toward other fish with similar coloration or body shape. It is best maintained in a ratio of three to four females for every male to help reduce aggression and encourage natural behavior.
The male Cobalt Ice Blue Cichlid's coloration becomes more vibrant during breeding as he establishes and defends a spawning territory. The female is a maternal mouthbrooder, collecting the fertilized eggs in her mouth where they incubate for approximately three weeks before she releases free-swimming fry. Newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake or cichlid foods are excellent first foods for the young.
The Cobalt Ice Blue Cichlid should be fed a diet consisting primarily of vegetable-based foods. Offer high-quality Spirulina flakes and pellets as staple foods, supplemented occasionally with live or frozen brine shrimp and other small invertebrates. Avoid excessive amounts of high-protein foods to help prevent digestive disorders such as Malawi bloat.
