Overview

The Blackberry Silver Dollar, Myleus schomburgkii, is a stunning South American characin known for its deep, rounded body shape and shimmering silver coloration accented with dark black markings that develop more prominently as the fish matures. Growing larger than many other silver dollar species, this active and hardy fish is an excellent choice for experienced aquarists with a large community aquarium.

The Blackberry Silver Dollar requires an aquarium of at least 180 gallons with ample swimming space and strong filtration to accommodate its adult size and active nature. This peaceful schooling fish should be kept in groups of five or more to help reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. Driftwood, rocks, and hardy plants can be used to replicate its natural environment, though soft-leaved plants may be consumed due to its herbivorous diet. They thrive in soft to moderately acidic water with excellent filtration and stable water conditions.

The Blackberry Silver Dollar may occasionally breed in the aquarium environment. A separate breeding aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants or spawning media is recommended. The eggs are scattered among vegetation, and removing the adults after spawning will help prevent egg and fry loss. The fry can be raised on newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed prepared foods.

The Blackberry Silver Dollar is primarily herbivorous and requires a diet rich in vegetable matter. Offer high-quality algae-based flakes, Spirulina pellets, vegetable wafers, and fresh vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, or lettuce. Supplement occasionally with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms to provide a balanced diet and promote excellent health.
