Overview
The Black Balloon Molly, Poecilia sphenops, is a selectively bred variety of the Common Molly prized for its rounded body shape and velvety black coloration. Peaceful, hardy, and active, this attractive livebearer is an excellent choice for both beginning and experienced aquarists. It adapts well to a wide range of water conditions and can be maintained in freshwater or lightly brackish aquariums.
The Black Balloon Molly requires an aquarium of at least 20 gallons with plenty of open swimming space and hardy plants. Dense vegetation provides shelter for fry and complements the fish's natural behavior. Peaceful in temperament, the Black Balloon Molly is an ideal addition to a community aquarium with other non-aggressive fish of similar size.
Male Black Balloon Mollies are smaller than females and are distinguished by their modified anal fin, called a gonopodium. Females are larger with a rounded anal fin and fuller body. As livebearers, females produce fully formed, free-swimming fry approximately every 4 to 6 weeks. Providing floating plants or dense vegetation will improve fry survival.
The Black Balloon Molly is an omnivore that thrives on a varied diet. Feed a high-quality Spirulina-based flake or pellet food as the staple diet, supplemented with frozen or live brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and other meaty foods to maintain excellent health and vibrant coloration.
