Overview

The Albino Red Eye Senegal Bichir, also known as the Albino Dinosaur Eel or Albino Dragonfin, is a fascinating member of the Polypteridae family. This distinctive variety features a beautiful creamy-white to pale ivory or soft golden-yellow body accented by striking pink to red eyes. Its elongated, eel-like body with scales, and unique row of flag-like dorsal finlets give it a prehistoric appearance, making it a captivating addition to freshwater aquariums. Native to the rivers and streams of Africa, the Senegal Bichir possesses specialized lung-like organs that allow it to breathe atmospheric air. Its distinctive lobed pectoral fins help maneuver and explore along the aquarium bottom.

The Albino Red Eye Senegal Bichir thrives in a well-established aquarium of at least 75 gallons, preferably with ample bottom space, a soft sandy substrate, and plenty of hiding places among driftwood, caves, and smooth rocks. Although generally peaceful toward larger tankmates, this species is considered semi-aggressive due to its predatory nature and may consume smaller fish or invertebrates that fit into its mouth. Primarily nocturnal, the Senegal Bichir spends much of its time resting or exploring the aquarium bottom, becoming more active during the evening hours. A tight-fitting, securely covered aquarium is essential to prevent escape, while maintaining access to the water's surface for breathing.

The Albino Red Eye Senegal Bichir is a hardy carnivore with a hearty appetite. Due to its relatively poor eyesight, it relies heavily on its excellent sense of smell and touch to locate food. Its diet should consist of a variety of protein-rich foods, including sinking carnivore pellets, frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex worms, earthworms, brine shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, and other meaty preparations. Feeding during the evening hours is recommended when this species is naturally most active.
