Overview

Albino Glass Cleaner Plecostomus

The Albino Glass Cleaner Plecostomus is a striking captive-bred color variety of the Common Pleco, Hypostomus plecostomus. Renowned for its exceptional algae-grazing abilities and peaceful temperament, this hardy armored catfish is a favorite among aquarists looking for both beauty and function in larger freshwater aquariums.

Unlike the wild Common Pleco, which displays mottled shades of brown and tan, the Albino Glass Cleaner Plecostomus features a brilliant golden-yellow to creamy white body with light pinkish eyes. Its vibrant coloration stands out beautifully against plants, driftwood, and dark aquarium décor, making it an eye-catching addition while tirelessly helping to keep aquarium glass and surfaces free of algae.

This species thrives in a well-established aquarium with excellent filtration, high oxygen levels, and moderate water movement. Driftwood, rocks, and caves provide ideal hiding places and mimic its natural habitat. As this fish can reach a substantial adult size, a minimum aquarium of 125 gallons is recommended for long-term care.

The Albino Glass Cleaner Plecostomus is known to spawn in caves and protected crevices under the right conditions, though successful breeding is uncommon in the home aquarium. Large aquariums with smooth rockwork, driftwood, and fine gravel or sand provide the best opportunity for spawning behavior.

Feeding is simple, as this pleco is an opportunistic omnivore. While it will spend much of its day grazing on algae and biofilm from glass, rocks, and décor, its diet should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, quality sinking pellets, fresh vegetables such as zucchini or cucumber, and occasional frozen foods including bloodworms or brine shrimp. Providing driftwood is also beneficial, as many plecos rasp on wood as part of their natural digestive process.
