Overview

The Scolymia Coral is a type of large polyp stony (LPS) coral, commonly known as the Doughnut, Scoly, Artichoke, or Disk Coral. This solitary, round coral generally has a single oral opening at its center, though some species may feature multiple openings. The Warpaint variety of Scolymia Coral boasts a striking mix of purple, mint green, and red, with shapes that range from cup to saucer, flat, or dome-like forms. Although not an aggressive coral, it should be kept at a safe distance from other corals, as it can expand to twice its size during daylight hours.

The Scolymia Coral is simple to care for in a reef aquarium and pairs well with bivalves, as it is often found alongside Tridacna Clams in its natural habitat. This coral is a great choice for both beginner and experienced reef aquarists. It thrives under moderate lighting and water flow. For optimal health, it is important to add calcium, strontium, and other trace elements to the water. During the evening, its feeding tentacles emerge, allowing it to consume meaty foods such as micro-plankton or brine shrimp.
