Overview

The Freshwater Asian Gold Clam offers a great choice for hobbyists seeking the unusual. This ornamental species introduces a delightful golden coloration to the aquarium and the opportunity to observe unusual and entertaining behavior. Unlike many freshwater bivalves, that completely bury themselves in the substrate, the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam prefers to remain only partially buried.

As a result, the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam is much easier to observe and appreciate. Interestingly, the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam is often quite active at night when you may be able to witness it using its "foot" to lumber across the aquarium bottom.

The Freshwater Asian Gold Clam is a filter feeder that can help keep aquarium water clear and clean. By removing uneaten food and detritus from the water column, the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam helps maintain water quality and lower nitrate levels.

For best care, house the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam in an aquarium of at least 15 gallons with medium to very fine substrate. The Freshwater Asian Gold Clam should not be housed with large aggressive or carnivorous fish as well as invertebrate-eating fish, such as freshwater puffers.

Keep in mind that the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam will not tolerate any copper-based medication. If treating the aquarium with medication containing copper, move the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam to another aquarium. Do not return the Freshwater Asian Gold Clam until the copper in the treated aquarium has been removed by means of chemical filtration.

The Freshwater Asian Gold Clam obtains its nutrition from filtering food and detritus from the water column. If necessary, its diet can be supplemented with a quality invertebrate food.

Customer Testimonials

I've had these clams for a month and they're absolutely delightful. They aren't active very often, you just see them open a crack to filter feed, but sometimes they open up and you see their big white foot muscle come out. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and one of them has moved a few inches. It makes for simple excitement a couple times a week. Two of mine have buried themselves mostly so I just see a small rim stick out, but the rim migrates slowly, usually about a half inch a day. The other two haven't buried themselves, but have moved around a bit. Really lots of fun, and an exciting addition to a tank.
