The Buttikoferi Cichlid, also known as the Zebra Tilapia, inhabits the river systems of Western Africa. The coloration of this fish is a series of black and white vertical stripes. Although they can be peaceful when young, as they grow so does their disposition, which becomes very territorial.
The ideal setup for the Buttikoferi Cichlid is a tank of at least 70 gallons with plenty of rocks for territories and a medium-sized gravel planted with hardy plants. This fish will become aggressive towards smaller fish, so it is important to keep them with similar-sized fish, or in a species tank.
Currently, the Buttikoferi Cichlid is being successfully bred in farms and aquariums. They are substrate spawners, excavating a pit to lay eggs in. During spawning time, the pair will become highly aggressive.
Feed the Buttikoferi Cichlid a variety of both meaty and vegetable-based foods. Live foods should be offered such as brine shrimp, earthworms and mosquito larvae. A quality flake and tablet food containing vegetable matter should also be included in their diet.

I have raised Buttikoferi Cichlids for about three years now and have found that they do best if kept with non-aggressive species. Although all fish have their own personalities, Buttikoferi Cichlids are great fish and fun to watch.
What a fish! My 3" is a hidden jewel. Although subtle in color, it reveals a beautiful neon blue trim around its mouth, chest and rear. It likes to rummage in sand and small gravel - which is always nice, especially when my catfish are being lazy.
I was just looking through your web site and ran across your Buttikoferi Cichlids. I had one for 8 years, and he was a definite part of the family. I am going to get two more and try to raise them in my 10-foot by 3-foot indoor pond. In my past experience, they are easy to keep and will play with you in their tank. When they are happy they show off all kinds of color, even a beautiful turquoise blue around the mouth and on their bottom or a bright black and white. This is the most wonderful fish I have ever seen. Thanks for offering such a wonderful variety of fish.
I've raised my Bttikoferi since 1985! He is a joy to my family. We call him "king neptune." He is 11" long! Very playful and moves everything around in his 80 gallon tank. Two Oscars are his companions.
