A warm, acidic environment with little or no hardness is essential to properly house the Green Discus. Provide a well-filtered, established aquarium of at least 50 gallons aquascaped with driftwood and several dense plant groups scattered around the aquarium. Be sure to maintain open swimming spaces for the Green Discus. Include floating plants to create areas of low or subdued lighting.
The Green Discus becomes slightly territorial during breeding. It is best to breed an established pair, or maintain a group of young Discus and allow them to pair themselves. Warm, soft, slightly acidic water is required for spawning. The pair will clean a flat surface (usually a broad leaf or the side of the aquarium) prior to spawning. The parents must not be removed from the fry; the fry feed on their parents' mucus.
