Florida Live Sand is used to add biodiversity to any saltwater aquarium. Live sand is teeming with beneficial bacteria that break down nitrogen-based waste that is produced by marine life. Several types of beneficial worms and crustaceans are also found in live sand and are used by many fish as a natural food source. The grain size of this bright white sand ranges from fine (sugar size) to medium grade. The recommended amount of Live Sand for an aquarium is 1 to 1-1/2 pounds per gallon, depending on the desired thickness. For a sand layer of 2 inches, 1-1/2 pounds per gallon will work well. Live Sand will benefit not only reef aquariums, but also fish-only aquariums that incorporate external filtration. We recommend incorporating sand-sifting invertebrates or fish to aquariums that contain live sand. These animals will maintain the proper oxygen content in the top layer of the sand, and stir up detritus so that it can be removed from the aquarium by the mechanical filter.

After the curing process, Live Sand should be introduced to the aquarium slowly. Place the sand in a large plastic bag and hold the top of the bag and submerge it to the bottom of the tank. Tip the bag onto the side, and slowly release the sand to areas of the bottom that you would like it to go. Gently smooth the sand to create an even layer across the bottom. Let the aquarium clear up for an hour or so, and change or rinse the mechanical pre-filter on the aquarium, and you are finished!

Please refer to our Live Rock/Sand Acclimation Guide to ensure a successful introduction to your tank.

Please note: We ship live rock & sand via standard shipping Tuesday through Friday. If you prefer next-day or Saturday shipping, you will incur additional shipping and handling costs.

Orders of this style sand may take up to one week to fill.
