The Red Crystal Shrimp is a colorful freshwater shrimp that makes an interesting addition. But most aquarists praise this member of the Atyidae family for its voracious appetite for freshwater algae of all kinds. In addition, the Red Crystal Shrimp is both beautiful - with mottled, bright red colors - and peaceful, which makes it an ideal choice for any peaceful freshwater system. The Red Crystal shrimp are divided or "graded" by the quantity and intensity of the white coloration on their bodies; the more white the shrimp have the higher they are on the grading scale.

Native to the swamps and streams of Japan and Asia, the Red Crystal Shrimp requires an established freshwater aquarium or pond of at least 10 gallons. It needs plenty of hiding places, sufficient amounts of algae on which to feed, and a mature substrate. For the best care, house the Red Crystal Shrimp with small peaceful fish or koi that will not pose the threat of making a meal of them. It prefers water that is slightly on the acidic side, and will handle a wide range of water temperatures.

If there is a male and female Red Crystal Shrimp in your aquarium they will most likely breed and the female will carry the eggs under her tail. The newly born shrimp will look like miniature adult shrimp and will eat the same thing as the adults. If breeding the Red Crystal Shrimp, it is important to house the hatchlings in a separate aquarium by themselves since most other tank mates will consume the young shrimp.

The Red Crystal Shrimp is an omnivore that consumes algae, detritus and left over food. If insufficient food is present, supplement with a quality flake food or pellet.

Customer Testimonials

Bill Malloy Parma , OH
Once acclimated to my tank, they are varied in color from speckled to a deep red with a whitish stripe down the back. They look beautiful against the green foliage of my 20gal tank. They live in a mass of java moss, and to my surprise, they have had offspring at least twice!
