Overview

Purveyors of nontraditional aquatic life, rejoice! The Aquacultured Photosynthetic Plating Red Sponge is the perfect choice for connoisseurs of the unusual and beautiful. Propagated here at our Coral Farm & Aquatic Life Facility, the Aquacultured Photosynthetic Plating Red Sponge boasts gorgeous red coloration highlighted by an iridescent and otherworldly metallic sheen. This ornamental sponge demonstrates a growth habit reminiscent of plating Montipora coral that adds unique structure and character for a one-of-a-kind display.

All sponges, including the Aquacultured Photosynthetic Plating Red Sponge, require some very special care in order to survive in the home aquarium. The most critical concern is that it never be exposed to air. Always keep sponges submerged in water. Exposure to air causes air bubbles to be trapped within the matrix of channels that line the inside of the sponge. Cells in contact with trapped air bubbles are deprived of vital water and nutrients and eventually die, affecting surrounding cells until the entire organism collapses.

The ideal environment for the Aquacultured Photosynthetic Plating Red Sponge is a mature aquarium (preferably with an integrated refugium) that contains plenty of live rock and a constant supply of natural foods of varying size. Moderate indirect water current is essential in keeping the sponge free of debris and in preventing algae or cyanobacteria from settling in the crevices of the sponge. Provide moderate lighting conditions achieved by T-5s, powerful LEDs or the more intense metal halides.

It is important to allow ample space around the Aquacultured Photosynthetic Plating Red Sponge in mixed reef aquariums since it can grow rather fast under ideal conditions, potentially crowding or shading neighboring corals.

The Aquacultured Photosynthetic Plating Red Sponge satisfies its nutritional requirements by means of photosynthetic symbionts hosted within its body. However, it will benefit from supplemental feedings in the form of micro-plankton or foods designed for filter feeding invertebrates.

The Aquacultured Photosynthetic Plating Red Sponge is mounted on a porous block or ceramic disk that can be placed easily and securely in or between the rockwork in the reef aquarium.

Customer Testimonials

Jeremy Sabitini Pleasantville , NY
Purchased one in August, it did very well, with in a week I had a cyanobacteria outbreak. Contacted liveaquaria about the safety with treating with common cyano treatments, I was advised that it should be fine, just follow the box instructions. I did and the cyano died and so did the sponge. I purchased a second in early October, also doing very well, but within a week cyano again. After doing some research there are multiple scientific papers that have been published about the symbiosis between sponges and cyano. If you get this sponge be aware about the possibility of cyano and the inability to treat the tank and not kill the sponge. Grows supper fast, very cool addition to my reef tank would purchase and recommend it to others with the slight caution.

I got mine and within two days it started reaching out to a nearby rock to cling to it. Its overall growth has been slow but evident on the edges and adding fold buds at other spots along its surface.

I purchased this one sponge and loved it so much that I ordered another one. It's a really nice coral and adds a lot of color and beauty to the aquarium. My hats off to Live Aquaria for such a great sponge.
