overviewThe Sailfin Catfish, also commonly known as the Sailfin Pim, Painted Catfish, or Saddle Catfish is a breathtaking monster for the discriminating experienced aquarist. Sometimes confused with Leiarius longibarbis, the Sailfin Catfish is dark brown with black spots and a light underside. Juveniles exhibit two light bands: one extending between the base of the dorsal and the lateral fin down the body to the caudal, as well as a second thinner band running parallel to the first but originating from the third to sixth dorsal rays.
A 300 gallon aquarium or small pond with floating plants is recommended for keeping the Sailfin Catfish. They grow large and strong enough to move large rocks and roots, so secure any rockwork to the bottom to avoid unnecessary damage to your aquarium. Setup should be large enough to allow both barbels enough clearance to avoid touching two sides of the aquarium at once, which is a stressful stimulus in captivity.
